What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government-funded program in Australia that provides support for people with permanent and significant disabilities. The NDIS is designed to help individuals with disabilities to live more independently and participate fully in the community. It provides funding for a wide range of services and support, such as therapy, equipment, and home modifications. The NDIS also provides funding for support workers to help individuals with activities of daily living and community access.
The NDIS is based on an individualised approach, where each participant has an individualised plan that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. The plans are reviewed regularly to ensure that they continue to meet the participant’s needs.
The NDIS supports over 500,000 Australians with a disability to access services and the support they need.
Disability rights are human rights
Disability rights are human rights, which means that individuals with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as those without disabilities. This includes the right to live a life of dignity, the right to equal access to education, employment, and healthcare, and the right to participate in all aspects of society.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international treaty that recognizes the rights of individuals with disabilities and sets out the obligations of countries to protect and promote those rights. It is the first human rights treaty of the 21st century and has been ratified by over 170 countries.
The principle of non-discrimination is central to the CRPD, which means that individuals with disabilities should not be treated differently or less favorably than others because of their disability. The CRPD also recognizes the importance of accessibility and reasonable accommodation to ensure that individuals with disabilities can fully participate in society.
How do I get NDIS support?
If you are interested in getting support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there are several steps you can take:
Check your eligibility: You can check your eligibility for the NDIS by visiting the NDIS website and using their online eligibility checker. To be eligible for the NDIS, you must have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to participate in everyday activities.
Access the scheme: If you are found to be eligible for the NDIS, you will need to access the scheme. You can do this by contacting the NDIS directly, or by working with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or an NDIS Access Partner in your community. They will guide you through the process and help you to access the scheme.
Develop your plan: Once you have accessed the NDIS, you will work with an NDIS planner to develop an individualized plan that outlines the support and services you need to achieve your goals.
Implement your plan: Once your plan is approved, you can start using your NDIS funding to purchase the supports and services you need. You will be required to work with providers that are registered with the NDIS.
Review and update: Your plan will be reviewed regularly, usually annually, to ensure it continues to meet your needs and goals. You can also request a review at any time if your circumstances change.
